Why Some People NEVER Quit Their 9-5

Imagine you have an aquarium.

One day, you notice that your fish isn’t eating anything and is barely moving.

Alarmed, you immediately call a veterinarian.

When a person or animal falls ill, the typical response is to administer pills, syrups, or injections.

But how do you treat a sick fish?

You can't exactly make it swallow a pill or give it an injection, can you?

The doctor doesn’t treat the fish directly. Instead, he treats the water.

Once the water is purified and balanced, the fish begins to recover, thriving in its improved environment.

This scenario is an apt metaphor for why some people never quit their 9-5 jobs.

It’s not that they lack the ability or desire to do something different; it's often that they are stuck in an environment that reinforces their current behaviours and mindsets.

Let’s explore this idea further.

The Comfort Zone: A Double-Edged Sword

A 9-5 job offers stability, a regular paycheck, and a predictable routine.

These are the pillars of the comfort zone, a psychological space where people feel safe and secure.

While this environment provides a sense of security, it can also be incredibly restrictive.

The comfort zone, much like untreated water in an aquarium, can become stagnant, stifling growth and preventing the development of new skills or the pursuit of passions.

People often stay in their 9-5 jobs because the comfort zone is, well, comfortable.

The fear of the unknown, the potential for failure, and the risk associated with leaving a stable job can be overwhelming.

In this way, the comfort zone becomes a barrier to pursuing a more fulfilling life, whether that involves starting a business, pursuing a creative passion, or changing careers entirely.

The Role of Environment in Personal Growth

Just as a fish's well-being depends on the quality of the water it lives in, a person’s growth and success are heavily influenced by their environment.

If you're surrounded by people who are content with mediocrity, who don’t challenge themselves, and who discourage risk-taking, it becomes difficult to break free from the mould.

This is where the concept of treating the water comes into play.

Rather than trying to change themselves within a limiting environment, people need to change the environment itself.

This could mean surrounding themselves with individuals who have a growth mindset, who are ambitious, and who encourage stepping out of their comfort zone.

The Power of a Supportive Community

One reason why many of my students succeed in property development is because of the strong, supportive community they become a part of.

When you’re surrounded by others who have faced similar challenges and found solutions, your own path to success becomes clearer.

In this community, everyone is committed to growth and helping one another.

This creates a ripple effect, where each person’s success inspires and motivates others.

In such an environment, even the most daunting challenges become manageable.

The collective knowledge, experience, and support from the group serve as a safety net, making it easier to take risks and push beyond personal limits.

This is why a strong network is invaluable; it transforms the process of buying, selling, or developing property from a daunting task into a collaborative effort where success is shared.

The Trap of the 9-5 Mentality

The 9-5 mentality is often a product of the environment.

In many workplaces, the emphasis is on doing just enough to meet expectations, clocking in and out, and waiting for the weekend.

This mindset can be infectious, spreading from colleague to colleague until it becomes the norm.

However, when you step into an environment where the norm is to exceed expectations, innovate, and constantly improve, your own mindset begins to shift.

You start to see possibilities instead of limitations.

You begin to understand that success isn’t about working harder within a limiting framework but about changing the framework itself.

The Invitation to Change Your Environment

If you find yourself stuck in a 9-5 job that you’re not passionate about, it might be time to treat the water.

Surround yourself with people who are on the same journey, who understand your struggles, and who can offer guidance and support.

This is exactly what our community offers—a space where like-minded individuals come together to share stories, tips, and strategies for success.

I invite you to join our community, where hundreds of people just like you are working to build a better life for themselves and their families.

They are committed to growth, learning, and helping one another succeed.

Conclusion: Winning by Changing the Environment

Ultimately, the key to breaking free from the 9-5 mentality isn’t about working harder or longer hours; it’s about changing the environment you’re in.

Just like the fish in the aquarium, sometimes the best way to treat your problems is by treating the water.

By surrounding yourself with winners, you set yourself up for success.

Don’t let the comfort zone keep you trapped in a life that doesn’t fulfil you.

Take the first step towards a brighter future by changing your environment, and watch as the opportunities for growth and success begin to multiply.
